Editorial policy

A calculator is only useful if the rule behind it is right. This is how we make sure it is.

Sources

We build each calculator and guide from primary sources, in this order:

  1. the text of the law, such as the US Code or Canada's Excise Tax Act,
  2. official guidance from the IRS, the Department of Education, the Department of Labor or the Canada Revenue Agency,
  3. official forms and their instructions.

We do not base a rule on news reports or other websites. Every calculator page lists the sources it uses, with links.

Checking

Each calculator has automated tests that run its formulas against worked examples. When the IRS or CRA publishes new guidance or forms, we check every affected page. The rules on this site were last checked on.

When rules are unclear

New laws often leave questions open until the agency issues guidance. When that happens, we say so on the page and explain which reading the calculator uses. When official sources disagree, we show both.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, please contact us. We fix confirmed errors as soon as we can and change the updated date on the page.

Independence

The site may show ads. Advertisers have no say in what we publish. We do not accept payment to change a calculator or guide.
