How the tips deduction works
The deduction applies to tax years 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028. You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips each year. The limit is the same for single and joint filers, but on a joint return each spouse's tips count toward the one $25,000 limit.
The deduction shrinks once modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) passes $150,000, or$300,000 for a joint return. It drops by $100 for every full $1,000 above that line.
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Maximum deduction | $25,000 per return |
| Phase-out starts | $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint) |
| Phase-out rate | $100 per full $1,000 over |
| Married filing separately | Not allowed |
| Social Security number | Required, valid for work |
What this calculator leaves out
The tax-saved figure uses one bracket. A large deduction can drop part of your income into a lower bracket, so the true saving can be a little smaller. Payroll taxes and state income tax are not reduced by this deduction.

Common questions
Are tips now tax-free?
Not completely. From 2025 to 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal income tax. Social Security, Medicare and most state taxes still apply.
Do I need to itemize to claim the tips deduction?
No. The deduction is claimed on Schedule 1-A and reduces taxable income whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.
What happens if my income is over $150,000?
The deduction falls by $100 for each full $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000, or $300,000 on a joint return. At $400,000 single the $25,000 maximum is gone.
Can married couples filing separately claim it?
No. Married taxpayers must file a joint return to take the tips deduction.
Which tips count as qualified tips?
Voluntary cash or card tips received in an occupation that customarily got tips before 2025, as listed by the Treasury. Automatic service charges do not count. The tips must be reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137.
